West Bengal to be called 'Bengal' & ‘Bangla’, ‘Bongo’ in Bengali

  • West Bengal cabinet today accepted the proposal to rename the state
  • Assembly will have to approve proposal, after which it will be forwarded to the Centre
  • New name in English would be 'Bengal'. New name in Bengali would be 'Bongo' or 'Bangla'
MUMBAI: If the new proposal is passed in the Assembly, West Bengal will be called 'Bengal' in English and 'Bangla' or 'Bongo' in Bengali.

The West Bengal cabinet today accepted a proposal on renaming the state, and that proposal will be forwarded to the Centre after it's passed by the West Bengal Assembly, in a special session that is expected to be held soon. The state Assembly is very likely to ratify this proposal because the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has a majority in the House.

The long-standing demand for a change in the name of the state received the nod of the state Assembly today. The proposal would be taken up in the special session of the Assembly, where it likely to get a nod given the ruling Trinamool's majority.
