Scott Walker is Entering the 2016 Presidential Race — And His Campaign Has a Very Specific Theme
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker will officially enter the 2016 Republican presidential primary race Monday, making his case as the Harley-riding, everyday man who still buys his clothes at Kohls.
His entrance means there will officially be 15 candidates running for the nomination. Ohio Gov. John Kasich and former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore are expected to announce their candidacies in the next few weeks.
The two-term governor created a name for himself early on taking on the state’s labor unions, prompting a 2012 recall election. Walker and his lieutenant governor, Rebecca Kleefish, won handily, becoming the first sitting state executive to survive a recall election in American history.
Walker’s speech will be made at the same suburban Milwaukee expo center where Walker and Kleefish celebrated their victory three years ago. The moment will also provide with an opportunity to further show off his Midwestern values to the American people. He will then set off on a campaign blitz that will take him to all four early primary states, making stops at various Harley-Davidson motorcycle shops along the way.
In an announcement video released last week, Walker urged his supporters to “Recall the Recall” as motivation to back his campaign.
While Walker waited to announce his candidacy until after the state passed itsbiennial budget, a tweet sent from the governor’s account Friday said that he was running.
