On counting day of the Delhi Assembly elections 2015, celebrations have broken out very early in the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office as the party surges ahead in the polls, virtually destroying the Kiran Bedi-helmed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) even in its fortresses.
After AAP’s landslide lead over BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Arvind Kejriwal to congratulate his party’s win in Delhi elections and invited him for tea.
The Aam Aadmi Party is all set to recapture power in the national capital after surging to a mammoth lead in more than 60 constituencies. BJP has fallen far behind, leading in just 8 seats while and Congress candidates are losing in all seats. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal was leading in the prestigious New Delhi constituency while his challenger BJP’s Chief Ministerial nominee Kiran Bedi was trailing in Krishna Nagar seat, considered a traditional stronghold of the party.
Congress’ Ajay Maken was trailing in Sadar Bazar seat – the party leads are fluctuating in 3 seats only.
As trends cemented what exit polls had foreseen, and as announcement of AAP’s victory neared, Kiran Bedi sought to shield PM Narendra Modi from facing the flak for the disastrous party campaign and said said she will take responsibility for BJP’s defeat. “We (me and Arvind Kejriwal) both are competing. We both are playing a match. When we play, only person can win. If the party wins, it will be a collective victory and if the party loses, I will take the responsibility,” Bedi reiterated as reporters at her residence asked ‘what went wrong’.
