Most Loyal Dog Breeds One Can Have
Some may be tremendously loyal towards one singular person where as others will show loyalty towards anyone they deem to be part of their ‘pack’. We’ve compiled a list of what we deem to be the 11 most loyal dog breeds based on history, personality traits and human experiences.
11. Golden Retriever
Very loyal and sociable, the Golden Retriever loves interacting with humans and having fun. They make great pets for families with children and are not prone to attacking visitors (except with kisses!). They are calm and well-mannered and can also make good watchdogs.
10. Staffordshire Terrier
Often confused with the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Terrier was bred for bear and bull fighting. Their aggressive and protective natures make them excellent guard dogs but require them to be properly socialized and trained from an early age. Staffordshire Terriers make great household pets, known to only be aggressive when protecting a family member. However, the one unfortunate thing about staffies’ loyal nature is how it can sometimes be used against them with abusive owners putting them in the fighting ring, knowing they will fight to the death for their owners.
9. St. Bernard
St. Bernards are gentle giants through and through. They are extremely lovable and are loyal to almost anyone, even strangers. Any owner would be lucky to have one of these by their side.
8. Labrador
There are many reasons why the Labrador is one of the most popular breeds worldwide, their incredible loyalty being one of them. A Labrador retriever is very devoted to the pack. It offers unconditional love and never-ending loyalty to everyone in the family.
7. Beagle
A hunting breed, Beagles are often used by homeland security personnel because of their incredible sense of smell. The modern breed has its origins in Great Britain but has even been mentioned in references dating back to Ancient Greece. They are known to be merry, kind, and gentle. They are pack animals and for this reason, they are very attached to their owners.
6. Brittany
The Brittany is a loyal soldier. These dogs will follow their humans through thick and thin, for miles and miles without straying. They are completely and utterly devoted to their human making them an ideal companion as well as being easy to train.
5. Boxer
‘Wherever you go, I go too.’ The typical Boxer is intelligent, alert, and fearless, yet friendly. Boxers are renowned for their great love of and loyalty to their families. They often are distrustful of strangers at first, but will not be aggressive unless they perceive a threat to their families.
4. Kuvasc
This breed is very territorial and has a strong instinct to guard its family and home. The Kuvasz tends to be aloof with strangers but craves affection from its family.
3. Rough Collie
The Rough Collie AKA the “Lassie dog”, just like its on-screen sister, is extremely loyal and devoted to its owner. In actual fact, this dog would also typically help anyone in need. They are highly intelligent and active dogs that are good with children as well as other animals making them perfect family dogs.
2. Shetland Sheepdog
Similar to the Rough Collie, every Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) owner knows these dogs basically live and breath for their humans. Also referred to as a personal “shadow” these dogs will follow their humans around the house never wanting to leave their side. They are placid and quiet by nature but will rush to their humans’ aid in any time of need. Unlike the Rough Collie who would aid almost anyone in distress, the Sheltie would generally only have this devoted loyalty towards their own humans.
1. German Shepherd
And at the top of our list, it is of course, the German Shepherd. These guys are bold, confident, and fearless. They are extremely intelligent and quick to learn commands, thus making them a favourite police and military dog breed. However this isn’t the only reason German Shepherds are used in the field, they are extremely trustworthy creatures who will put themselves in harms way to help anyone in need. These guys are loyal to the core.
