Two held for Infosys campus rape

PUNE: Two waiters of an Infosys canteen on its Rajiv Gandhi Info Tech Park campus in Hinjewadi were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 25-year-old woman, working in the company on contract.

The arrested waiters were hired on contract by the house-keeping vendor of Infosys. One among them allegedly raped the woman on Sunday evening in a washroom on the Infosys campus. The other tried to click pictures of the act and blackmail her.

The victim on Monday went to the Hinjewadi police station and reported the incident, after which an FIR was lodged. The duo was arrested on Tuesday morning. They have been booked under the sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. The police are also probing the possibility of an affair gone sour.

Infosys issued a statement, saying its zero tolerance policy against sexual harassment was applicable to employees on conctract.

Hinjewadi police inspector Vishwajeet Khule said both the accused were staying in the Hinjewadi area at present. They have been identified as Paritosh Subhas Baug (21), having his roots in West Bengal, and Prakash Kisan Mahadik (30), hailing from Raigad.

Khule said the married woman also stayed in the Hinjewadi area with her husband - an office boy in a neighbouring company.

"The woman has cleared her HSC exam. She came to Pune with her husband from Yavatmal in Vidarbha after marriage about a year ago," Khule added.

On Sunday, the office was relatively less crowded and the woman had reported to duty at 7am, Khule said.

"Around 5.45 pm on Sunday, the woman went to the ladies washroom handing over keys of the cash counter of her department to her colleague. Baug followed her," he said.

Baug allegedly overpowered the woman in the washroom and raped her. Hearing some noise, Mahadik entered the washroom and allegedly tried to take photographs of the woman with Baug instead of rescuing her, Khule said. He even allegedly threatened to make the photographs public.

Inspector Khule said Mahadik did take out his cellphone to take photographs of the woman when she was being raped on Sunday. "But he failed to take pictures. We have checked his cellphone after arresting him," he said.

"The woman went home in distress after Baug and Mahadik set her free on Sunday. After taking a day's rest, she reported the incident to the police. We have registered a complaint against Baug and Mahadik," he said.

The rape survivor also claimed that she screamed for help but no one came to her rescue.

Khule said the woman had joined the canteen services of Infosys about a month ago on contract. "The accused have been working on the company premises for the last one year," he added.

Baug migrated to the city about a year ago and is unmarried. Mahadik is married and has two children, Khule said.

The company premises have CCTV cameras and the police would study their footage to ascertain how the incident happened, Khule added.
