Who ARE Those New Avengers, Though?

After all, for anyone who's skipped an MCU movie or two, a couple of those new heroes might be something of a surprise - and even the heroes introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron didn't get all that much time to make an impression.

Here, then, is a look at just who each of our new Avengers are, starting with their co-leaders:

Captain America

Real Name: Steve Rogers

Played By: Chris Evans

Superpowers: The super-soldier serum that made Steve into Captain America may have made him into America's greatest hero - but it did so by raising him to the highest point of human physical perfection, rather than giving him any actual powers.

MCU Back Story: He's Captain freakin' America.

Comic-Book Precedent: Having joined the Avengers way back in 1964's The Avengers #4, Cap's been a mainstay of the team ever since - acting as its leader on numerous occasions.

Black Widow

Full name: Natasha Romanoff (or Natalia "Natasha" Alianovna Romanova in the comics)

Played By: Scarlett Johansson

Superpowers: None. She's just a complete bad-ass.

MCU Back Story: Having first appeared in the MCU back in Iron Man 2, Black Widow's importance to the team - and to Cap - has risen steadily throughout both Avengers movies and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Comic-Book Precedent: A much less regular part of the Avengers line-up in the comics than in the MCU, Black Widow has nonetheless been a reliable member of the team over the years, when called upon.

War Machine

Full name: James 'Rhodey' Rhodes

Played By: Don Cheadle

Superpowers: A super-powered battle-suit designed by best-bud Tony Stark. He's basically Iron Man, in grey.

MCU Back Story: First appearing way back in Iron Man (though not played by Cheadle) Rhodey has long been the one hero Tony Stark could always rely on. Whether that'll be true for Cap too remains to be seen...

Comic-Book Precedent: Rhodey actually first served in the Avengers as Iron Man himself - during a period of time where Tony Stark had, much like in the MCU, stepped down from the armor. Since then, though, he's occassionaly served in the team using his own name - whether that's War Machine or Iron Patriot.

The Falcon

Full name: Sam Wilson

Played By: Anthony Mackie

Superpowers: None - but he does have an awesome flying body-suit (and, in the comics, the ability to communicate with birds)...

MCU Back Story: Making his first appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Sam quickly became Cap's best (non-Bucky) buddy, with the pair bonding over their military service, and willingness to do what's right, no matter what.

Comic-Book Precedent: The Falcon's first spell with the Avengers was actually the result of their government liaison enforcing a mandated racial quota, as they had no other African America members. Sam didn't take too kindly to that, though, and quit at the earliest available opportunity. Later, though, he served the Avengers with distinction, recently even taking over as Captain America.

Scarlet Witch

Full name: Wanda Maximoff

Played By: Elizabeth Olsen

Superpowers: In the comics, she's a mutant with the power to control probability (and reality itself), along with a strong grasp of chaos magic. In the MCU, though, her powers are closer to telekinesis, with a dash of mind control.

MCU Back Story: If you've seen Age of Ultron, you're all caught up. Along with her twin brother Pietro, Wanda was initially opposed to the Avengers, but later joined the team to help save the world from Ultron.

Comic-Book Precedent: A member of the team since 1965's Avengers #16, Wanda was originally a member of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, before defecting to the Avengers. She quickly became a stalwart of the team, and has rarely been away from the action for too long (except for those couple of times when she went crazy and killed a bunch of people).

The Vision

Full name: Just...The Vision (Though he sometimes goes by Victor Shade in the comics)

Played By: Paul Bettany

Superpowers: He's super-strong, can fire lasers from his eyes, and adjust his density at will - and, being artificially created, he's also as intelligent as a super-computer.

MCU Back Story: Originally Tony Stark's A.I. butler J.A.R.V.I.S, The Vision was born when Ultron's plans to create himself a perfect semi-human body were foiled by the Avengers.

Comic-Book Precedent: Again a long-time member of the team, having joined back in The Avengers #57, and regularly served on the team in the years since. He also, notably, ended up marrying The Scarlet Witch...which went about as well as you'd think
